Video Download Failed? Private, Restricted and Broken Links Explained

You paste a link, press the button, and instead of a video you get an error. When a video download fails, the cause is almost never random. It usually comes down to one of a handful of reasons: who is allowed to watch the video, whether it still exists, whether it's live, or whether the link you copied actually points to a single video.
This article explains each cause across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X, what the error messages in the Online Toolsz video downloader mean, and which problems you can fix in a few seconds versus the ones no downloader should get around.
A 30-second check before anything else
- Open the link in a private or incognito window. If the video plays without logging in, the downloader should be able to read it. If you see a login screen, an age check or a "content not available" notice, that's your answer.
- Make sure it's a single video. The link should point to one post, Reel, Short or video, not a profile, channel, playlist, search or hashtag page.
- Copy it fresh from the share menu. Share, then Copy link, avoids half-copied addresses and in-app browser leftovers.
- Retry once after a minute. Some errors are simply temporary.
What the error messages mean
| Message | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Please paste a valid video link starting with http:// or https://." | The box contains text that isn't a full web address, often a partial copy or a caption | Copy the link again using Share, then Copy link |
| "Could not read this video. Check the link and try again." | The video is private, deleted, login-only, or the link isn't a video page | Run the private-window test above and check the link type |
| A message saying the platform asked to verify access | The video is private, age-restricted or members-only | Nothing to fix on our side; use a different, public video |
| "No ready-made MP4 with both picture and sound is available for this video." | The server couldn't find a combined file for this one video | Try the Fast download button if it's shown, or the audio option |
| "The download failed. Please try again in a moment." | A temporary problem between our server and the platform | Wait a minute and retry |
| A connection error while contacting the download server | Your network dropped or something blocked the request | Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, pause a VPN or ad blocker, retry |
| A message that the platform is unavailable | The site isn't supported right now | Use a supported platform: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook or X |
Private and friends-only videos
Every platform has its own version of "only some people can see this": private YouTube videos, private TikTok accounts, private Instagram profiles, Facebook posts shared with Friends, protected X accounts. The downloader works without logging in to any of them, so it sees exactly what a stranger would see. If a stranger can't watch it, it can't be downloaded here, and that is intentional. The fix is to ask the owner for the file.
Unlisted YouTube videos are a different case. They aren't private, because anyone with the link can watch them, so run the private-window test before assuming they'll fail.
Age-restricted and members-only content
Age-restricted videos require a signed-in account with a confirmed age. Channel memberships, paid courses and subscriber-only posts require a paying account. In both cases the platform asks to verify access, and the tool stops there. We don't support these and won't try to work around them.
Region-locked videos
Some videos are blocked in certain countries because of licensing. Our server fetches the video from its own location, so a video that plays for you can still fail if it's blocked where the server is, and the reverse can happen too. There's no setting to change this. If a video matters to you, check whether the creator has posted it somewhere without the restriction.
Deleted, removed or archived posts
Once a creator deletes a post, archives an Instagram post, or a platform takes a video down for a policy or copyright reason, the file is gone from public view. Old links may still show a thumbnail in chat apps or search results, which is misleading; the video itself no longer exists for anyone outside the account.
Live streams and premieres
A live stream doesn't have a finished file yet, so there's nothing to download while it's running. The same goes for scheduled premieres that haven't started. When a creator saves the broadcast as a regular video afterward, that recording has its own link, and that's the one to use.
Login-only formats
Some content is built around being logged in: Instagram and Facebook Stories, Highlights, Close Friends posts, private group videos, and anything in direct messages. Stories that have expired can't be recovered by anyone. Don't expect these to work.
Link format problems
A surprising share of failures come from the link itself:
- Profile, channel or playlist links: the tool handles one video at a time. Playlists and whole channels aren't supported.
- Shortened links such as vm.tiktok.com, youtu.be, fb.watch or facebook.com/share/: these usually work, but if one fails, open it in a browser and copy the full address it lands on.
- Tracking parameters like ?s=20, ?igsh= or &si=: harmless most of the time; remove everything after the question mark if a link misbehaves.
- Quote posts and shares: on X and Facebook, the video belongs to the original post. Copy that link instead.
- Unsupported sites: Douyin and Bilibili are not supported right now.

Problems on your side of the screen
- In-app browsers: opening the downloader inside Facebook, Instagram or TikTok's built-in browser can block downloads. Use Safari, Chrome or your normal browser instead.
- Leaving the page too early: while you see "Preparing video..." the server is still working. Switching apps or locking the phone can interrupt it.
- Full storage: a download that starts and then vanishes often means the phone ran out of space.
Quality isn't a failure
Getting 360p instead of 1080p isn't an error. Older YouTube videos may only offer 240p to 360p through Fast download; the high-quality MP4 button asks the server for the best version available. Nothing can exceed what the uploader originally posted, and 4K or 8K is never guaranteed. Privacy note: links processed by the high-quality and audio buttons pass through our download server, which fetches the file and sends it back to you.
Restrictions are there for a reason
Private settings, age gates and membership walls exist to protect people and their work. Download your own videos, content you have permission to save, or material under Creative Commons or in the public domain. Respect each platform's terms and copyright, don't re-upload other people's videos, and credit creators when you share with permission. Not legal advice.

FAQ
Why does a video play on my phone but fail in the downloader?
You're probably logged in on your phone. The downloader isn't, so it sees the video as a stranger would. Try the private-window test.
Can I download a private video if I have the link?
No. Having the link doesn't change who is allowed to watch it. Unlisted YouTube videos aren't private in that sense, since anyone with the link can view them.
Will retrying help?
For download failures and connection errors, often yes. For private, deleted or restricted videos, no amount of retrying changes the result.
Can I download a live stream?
Not while it's live. Wait until the creator posts the recording as a normal video, then use that link.
Are Douyin and Bilibili supported?
Not right now. Links from those sites won't work in the tool at the moment.
