How to Download Video from X (Twitter) as MP4 or MP3

How to Download Video from X (Twitter) as MP4 or MP3

X is where a lot of video shows up first: a clip from a press conference, a product demo, a goal replayed from three angles. Then it scrolls away, and the search bar is little help finding it again a week later. If you posted the clip yourself or have the right to keep it, the quickest way to download video from X (Twitter) is to copy the post link and run it through a browser-based downloader. No app, no browser extension, no X login.

This guide uses the free Online Toolsz video downloader, which handles public X posts alongside YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. Below are the exact steps on phone and desktop, how to deal with posts that hold more than one clip, and the reasons some links will never work.

What the Twitter video downloader can and can't do

The rule of thumb is simple: if the post comes from a public account and the video plays for anyone who opens it, it's a candidate. Here is the short version.

  • Works: public posts with an uploaded video, whether they come from a news outlet, a brand, a sports club or an individual with a public profile.
  • Doesn't work: posts from protected accounts (the ones with a padlock next to the name), live broadcasts, posts deleted by the author or removed by X, and anything you can only see while signed in.
  • Formats: a full MP4 with picture and sound, or an audio-only file. In our own tests, audio from X came through as MP3.

One thing that's different from other platforms: X videos don't get the "Fast download" button. Every X download is prepared on our server first and then handed to your browser. It takes a few extra seconds to start, but what you end up with is an ordinary MP4 that plays in any video app.

How to download a Twitter video, step by step

  1. Copy the post link. In the X app, tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link. On desktop, click the same share icon and pick Copy link, or open the post on its own page and copy the address bar. A correct link looks like x.com/username/status/ followed by a long number.
  2. Open the downloader in any browser: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Samsung Internet all work.
  3. Paste and fetch. Paste the link into the box and press Get Video Info. After a moment a card appears with the thumbnail, the post text as a title, the account name, the length of the clip and an X platform badge.
  4. Choose a format. Tap Download MP4 video (high quality) for the clip with picture and sound, or Download audio (M4A / MP3) if all you need is the soundtrack, say for a quote you want to transcribe.
  5. Let it finish preparing. You'll see "Preparing video..." while the server works. Keep the tab open; the file starts downloading as soon as it's ready.

On a computer the file lands in your normal Downloads folder. On a phone there's one more step, covered next.

Saving X videos on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, Safari stores downloads in the Files app, not in Photos. Open Files, go to Downloads, tap the video, then the share button and Save Video. On Android, Chrome saves to the Downloads folder, and most gallery apps list it within a few seconds. If the video doesn't show up where you expect, our guide on saving downloaded videos to iPhone and Android walks through every browser and the usual hiccups.

Posts with several clips, quote posts and replies

An X post can carry several media items at once, in any mix of photos and videos. The downloader reads the post and returns one video. When there's a single clip, that's exactly what you want. When there are several, you'll get one of them, and it may not be the one you were watching.

A few habits save a lot of retries:

  • Quote posts: when someone quotes a video, the clip belongs to the original post, not the quote. Tap into the quoted post and copy that link instead.
  • Reposts: same idea. Open the original author's post and copy its link.
  • Replies with video: every reply is its own post with its own status number. Open the reply itself before you copy, otherwise you'll copy the parent post and get its video, or nothing.
  • Several clips in one post: check whether the author also posted them one by one, for example as a thread. A post with a single video is the most dependable input.

Common errors and how to fix them

What you seeLikely causeWhat to try
"Could not read this video. Check the link and try again."The link points to a profile, a search page, a protected account or a deleted postOpen the link, confirm it's a single post with a video that plays, and copy it again from the share menu
Same error on a link ending in ?s=20 or similarExtra tracking text after the post numberDelete everything from the question mark onward and fetch again
An old twitter.com link failsOutdated link formatOpen it in your browser, let it redirect to x.com, then copy the new address
"The download failed. Please try again in a moment."A temporary hiccup between our server and XWait a minute and press the button again
A connection error messageYour network dropped while the file was being preparedSwitch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or pause a VPN, then retry

If none of these match, our article on why video downloads fail on private or restricted links goes through every cause across platforms.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Quality is capped by what X stores. If the uploader posted a blurry 480p clip, no downloader can turn it into HD, and we don't promise 4K.
  • One post at a time. There's no option for a whole timeline, an account's media tab, your bookmarks or a list.
  • No subtitles or captions are included, and live broadcasts can't be captured.
  • Longer videos take longer to prepare, because the server has to fetch the whole file before your download starts.

Privacy note: the link you paste is processed by our download server, which fetches the video from X and passes it to your browser. We never ask for your X username or password, and you don't need an account on our site either.

Use X videos fairly

Being able to save a clip doesn't make it yours. Download your own posts, videos the owner has allowed you to use, or material that is clearly Creative Commons or in the public domain. Keep within X's terms and copyright law, don't re-upload someone else's video as your own, and when you share or reference a clip, credit the person who made it. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

FAQ

Do I need an X account to download a video?

No. For public posts, you only need the link. The tool never signs in to X, which is also why it can't reach protected accounts.

Why don't I see a Fast download button for X?

For X, the tool prepares every video on our server rather than pointing your browser straight to a ready-made file. You'll only see the MP4 and audio buttons, and both give you a complete file.

Can I download a video from a protected account?

No. Protected posts are visible only to approved followers, and the downloader doesn't bypass that. Ask the account owner to send you the file directly.

Can I save just the sound from an X video as MP3?

Yes. Use Download audio (M4A / MP3). In our tests, X audio arrived as an MP3 file that plays on phones and computers alike.

Can I download every video from a thread at once?

Not in one go. Open each post in the thread that contains a video and run its link separately.
