Fix sideways and upside-down pages in a PDF
Scanners, phone scanning apps and copiers often produce PDFs where one or two pages come out sideways or upside down. A landscape spreadsheet printed into a portrait report has the same problem. This tool lets you turn those pages the right way up and save the result as a normal PDF that opens correctly in any reader.
You can rotate a single page, a handful of pages, or every page in the document at once. Each page appears as a thumbnail, and the thumbnail turns on screen as you click, so you can see the final orientation before you download anything.
It is useful for office staff tidying up scanned contracts, students submitting scanned homework, teachers preparing handouts, and anyone who has received a PDF that has to be read with their head tilted.
How to rotate PDF pages
- Add your PDF. Drag the file onto the upload area or click it to choose a file. One PDF is handled at a time.
- Wait for the thumbnails. Every page is shown in a grid labelled "Page 1 of N", "Page 2 of N" and so on.
- Rotate a single page. Hover over a thumbnail (or tap it on a touch screen) and click the round rotate button. Each click turns that page 90 degrees clockwise. Click twice for 180 degrees, three times to end up 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
- Rotate the whole document. Use the "Left" or "Right" buttons next to "Rotate Document (All Pages)" to turn every page 90 degrees counter-clockwise or clockwise. Per-page rotations you already made are kept and added to.
- Save. Click "Apply Rotation". Your browser downloads a new file with "-rotated" added to the original name.
If you get lost, click "Cancel" and add the file again to start from the original orientation.
Why rotation here does not reduce quality
Every PDF page has a rotation setting stored alongside its content. This tool changes only that setting. Text, images, vector drawings, fonts and links are left exactly as they were, so nothing is re-compressed or re-rendered. Text you could select or search before is still selectable and searchable afterwards, and the file size stays almost the same.
This also means the change is reversible: if you rotate a page the wrong way, open the saved file again and turn it back. Repeating the process does not degrade the page.
Common situations
- Mixed scans. A multi-page scan where the feeder flipped a few sheets. Rotate just those pages and leave the rest alone.
- Landscape tables. Wide tables or charts that were inserted sideways into a portrait document. Turn them so they read properly on screen.
- Phone scans. Receipts or forms photographed in landscape and saved as PDF. Rotate all pages at once with the Left or Right button.
- Before merging. Fix orientation first, then combine files with the Merge PDF tool so the final document is consistent.
Limitations to know about
- Rotation works in steps of 90 degrees. It will not straighten a page that was scanned slightly crooked.
- Password-protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be rotated. Remove the password in the program that created the file first.
- Very long documents produce many thumbnails, which can take a while to draw on slower phones and older computers.
- If you also need to reorder or delete pages, the Organize PDF tool combines reordering, deleting and rotating in one place.
Your file stays on your device
Online Toolsz rotates the PDF inside your browser using JavaScript. The file is read from your computer or phone, changed in memory, and saved back to your downloads folder. It is not uploaded to our server, which matters when the document contains contracts, ID scans or medical paperwork. Closing the tab clears the file from the page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rotate just one page instead of the whole PDF?
Yes. Use the rotate button on that page's thumbnail. Only pages you click are changed; the others keep their current orientation.
How do I rotate a page counter-clockwise?
The per-page button turns pages clockwise, so click it three times to reach 90 degrees counter-clockwise. For every page at once, use the "Left" button.
Will rotating make the text blurry or unsearchable?
No. Only the page's rotation setting changes. The content itself is not redrawn, so text stays sharp and searchable.
Is the rotation permanent?
It is saved into the new file, so it shows the same way in every PDF reader and when printed. You can still rotate it again later if needed.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in a current mobile browser. Tap a thumbnail to reveal its rotate button. Large files are slower on phones than on a computer.
