How to Download Instagram Reels and Video Posts

How to Download Instagram Reels and Video Posts

You film a Reel, edit it inside Instagram, add text and music, post it, and then delete the drafts to free up space. Months later you want that exact version for a portfolio or a client deck, and the only copy left lives on Instagram. That's the most common reason people want to download Instagram Reels, and it's easy to do from a browser when the account is public.

This guide shows how to save Reels and video posts with the free Online Toolsz downloader, what to expect from carousel posts, and where Instagram draws the line: private accounts, Stories and anything behind a login.

Public accounts only: why it matters

Instagram shows some content to everyone and some only to approved followers. The downloader works like a visitor who isn't logged in, so it can only reach posts from public accounts.

  • Public account: Reels and video posts can be downloaded.
  • Private account: the profile says the account is private and you have to be an approved follower to see posts. The downloader can't reach these, even if you follow the person.
  • Your own private account: if you need your own videos and your account is private, either switch it to public briefly or, better, use Instagram's own option to download your account data, which includes your original uploads.

A quick test: open the post link in a private or incognito browser window. If Instagram shows the video, the downloader should be able to read it. If you hit a login screen, it can't.

How to download an Instagram Reel, step by step

  1. Copy the link. In the Instagram app, open the Reel or post and tap the paper-plane share icon, then Copy link. On a computer, click the three dots on the post and choose Copy link, or open the post and copy the address bar. Links look like instagram.com/reel/ or instagram.com/p/ followed by a short code.
  2. Open the downloader in your phone's browser or on desktop. There's nothing to install.
  3. Paste and press Get Video Info. A card appears with the thumbnail, caption, account name, duration and an Instagram badge.
  4. Choose your format:
    • Fast download (quality) grabs the ready-made MP4 that Instagram itself serves, with picture and sound in one file. For public Reels this button normally shows up, and it's the quickest option.
    • Download MP4 video (high quality) lets our server prepare the file instead. Use it if the fast option is missing or fails.
    • Download audio (M4A / MP3) keeps just the sound, usually as M4A.
  5. Save it where you want it. On iPhone, the file goes to Files, then Downloads; tap it, then Share and Save Video to put it in Photos. On Android, it lands in Downloads and appears in your gallery shortly after. Our iPhone and Android saving guide has more detail if it doesn't show up.

Carousel posts with several videos

A carousel can hold a mix of photos and videos. The downloader returns one video per link, so for a post with a single video among photos you'll get that video. When a carousel contains several videos, you'll get one of them, and it might not be the slide you had on screen.

What helps:

  • Check whether the creator also posted the clip as a standalone Reel; many do. That Reel link is the cleanest input.
  • If it's your own carousel, the originals on your phone or in your editing app are a better source than any download.
  • Photos inside a carousel aren't downloaded. The tool is built for video.

Stories, Highlights and live videos

This is where people most often expect more than is possible.

  • Stories vanish after a day, and once they expire there is nothing left to download. Even while active, Stories are generally shown to logged-in users, which the tool isn't.
  • Highlights are saved Stories and follow the same login rules, so don't count on them.
  • Live videos can't be captured while they're running.

If you need your own Stories, Instagram's archive (in your profile menu) keeps them, and you can save them from there inside the app.

Saving audio from Reels

The audio button is handy for your own voiceover, a talk you recorded, or a sound you made yourself. Be careful with Reels that use music from Instagram's library: that track is licensed for use inside Instagram, not for you to save and reuse elsewhere. If you need the song, buy or stream it from a proper source.

Common problems and fixes

  • "Could not read this video. Check the link and try again." The account is private, the post was deleted or archived, or the link points to a profile instead of a post. Open the link and confirm the video plays.
  • Link with ?igsh= or ?utm_source= at the end: these share-tracking parameters usually don't matter, but if a link fails, remove everything from the question mark and try again.
  • Link copied from a profile grid: a profile address like instagram.com/username won't work. Open the specific Reel first.
  • Download starts but stops: often a weak mobile connection. Switch to Wi-Fi or retry.
  • "The download failed. Please try again in a moment." A temporary error. Give it a minute and press the button again.

Limitations

One Reel or post per link; no whole profiles, saved collections or tagged posts. No captions or comments. Quality matches what Instagram stores, which is often compressed compared with your original upload, and there's no guarantee of 1080p or 4K. Privacy note: with the server-processed buttons, your link goes through our download service, which fetches the file and returns it to you. You never enter your Instagram login on our site.

Play fair with other people's Reels

Reels are easy to save and easy to misuse. Stick to your own videos, clips the creator has said you may use, or Creative Commons and public-domain material. Follow Instagram's terms and copyright law, don't repost someone else's Reel as yours, and credit the creator by name and handle when you share with permission. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.

FAQ

Can I download Reels from a private account?

No. Private posts are only shown to approved followers who are logged in, and the downloader doesn't log in. Ask the owner to send you the file.

Does it work for Instagram video posts that aren't Reels?

Yes. Regular posts with video, with links containing instagram.com/p/, work the same way as Reels, as long as the account is public.

Can I download someone's Instagram Story?

Not reliably. Expired Stories are gone, and active ones are generally restricted to logged-in viewers. Your own Stories can be saved from your archive inside the app.

Do I need the Instagram app to copy the link?

No. You can copy the link from instagram.com in any browser, including on a computer.

Will the downloaded Reel include the music?

Yes, the MP4 contains the sound you hear in the Reel. Whether you're allowed to reuse that music is a separate question, and for library tracks the answer is usually no.

Why is the quality lower than my original?

Instagram compresses uploads. The download is the version Instagram serves, so your own original file will always look better.
