How to Download Facebook Videos and Reels from Public Posts

How to Download Facebook Videos and Reels from Public Posts

Facebook is an awkward place to keep video. Your own Reels get buried under months of posts, a Page you follow deletes last year's livestream recap, and the "Saved" list only works for as long as the original stays online. If you want an actual file, you can download Facebook video and Reels straight from your browser, as long as the post is public and you have a good reason to keep it.

The free Online Toolsz video downloader reads public Facebook videos, Watch videos and Reels and gives you an MP4 or an audio file. Most of the trouble people run into with Facebook has nothing to do with the downloader itself; it comes from privacy settings and from the many different link formats the app produces. Both are covered below.

Public vs private: what the Facebook video downloader can reach

Facebook decides who can see every post, and the downloader can only see what an anonymous visitor can see. That single fact explains almost every failure.

Type of videoCan it be downloaded?
Video on a public PageYes
Public ReelsYes
Facebook Watch videosYes
Profile post with the audience set to Public (globe icon)Usually yes
Friends-only or custom-audience postsNo
Videos inside private groupsNo
Stories, Messenger videos, videos while they are liveNo

To check a post, look at the small icon next to the time it was posted. A globe means Public. Two people means Friends. A padlock or a group name usually means the audience is limited. Public groups sit in a grey area: the group may be open, but individual videos can still behave like private ones. If a group video fails, treat it as private.

Copying the right link: app vs web

Facebook hands out different links depending on where you tap, and some work better than others.

In the Facebook app (iPhone and Android)

  • Reels: tap the share arrow on the right side of the Reel, then Copy link.
  • Feed videos: tap Share under the post, then Copy link. If you only see share targets, scroll the row of options sideways to find it.
  • App links often look like facebook.com/share/v/ or facebook.com/share/r/ followed by a short code, or fb.watch/ plus a code. These are redirects to the real video address.

In a desktop or mobile browser

  • Click the video so it opens on its own page, then copy the address bar. Reels look like facebook.com/reel/ plus a number; Watch videos look like facebook.com/watch/?v= plus a number.
  • On a regular post, clicking the timestamp opens the post's own page, which gives you a clean link.

Tip: if a share link fails in the downloader, paste it into your browser first, let Facebook open the video, then copy the full address from the bar. That expanded link is the most reliable input.

How to download a Facebook video or Reel

  1. Copy the video's link using one of the methods above.
  2. Open the downloader page in Safari, Chrome or any other browser. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
  3. Paste the link and press Get Video Info. A card appears showing the thumbnail, the title or caption, the Page or person who posted it, the duration and a Facebook badge.
  4. Pick a button:
    • Fast download (quality) appears when Facebook offers a ready-made MP4 with picture and sound in one file. It downloads straight from Facebook's servers, so it's usually the quickest choice.
    • Download MP4 video (high quality) sends the job to our download server, which prepares the best version it can get, then starts the download.
    • Download audio (M4A / MP3) saves only the sound. For Facebook this usually comes as M4A.
  5. Find the file in your Downloads folder. On iPhone that's inside the Files app; from there, use Share and Save Video to move it to Photos. On Android it shows up in Downloads and, after a moment, in your gallery.

Which to choose? Try Fast download first when it's there. If it isn't, or the quality label looks lower than you expected, use the high-quality MP4 button.

Facebook-specific tips

  • Your own Reels: Facebook doesn't always keep the version you uploaded at full quality. If you still have the original in your camera roll or editing app, that copy will be better than any download.
  • Shared videos: when a friend shares a Page's video, the post you see is the share, not the source. Tap through to the original Page post and copy that link.
  • Ended live broadcasts: while a video is live, it can't be downloaded. Some Pages publish the recording afterward as a regular video; if so, use that new post's link.
  • m.facebook.com links: mobile-site links point to the same videos. If one gives you trouble, swap m. for www. and try again.

Common errors and fixes

  • "Could not read this video. Check the link and try again." Most often the post isn't public, the video was removed, or the link points to a profile or group page rather than a video. Open it in a private browser window: if Facebook shows a login page instead of the video, the downloader can't see it either.
  • The card shows the wrong video: you probably copied the link of a share or a post with several videos. Open the specific video on its own page and copy that address.
  • No Fast download button: normal for some videos. Use the high-quality MP4 button instead.
  • "The download failed. Please try again in a moment." A temporary problem. Wait a short while and retry.

Limitations

The tool handles one video per link. It won't pull every video from a Page, an album or a group, and it doesn't fetch captions. Quality depends on what Facebook stored, so there's no guarantee of 1080p or 4K. Privacy note: when you use the server-processed buttons, your link goes to our download service, which fetches the video and returns the file to you. We don't ask for your Facebook login.

Respect the people behind the video

Most Facebook video belongs to someone: a creator, a business, a friend's family. Download your own uploads, videos you have permission to use, or content released under Creative Commons or in the public domain. Follow Facebook's terms and copyright rules, don't repost other people's work as yours, and give credit when you share. Not legal advice; if the stakes are high, ask the owner in writing.

If Instagram is part of your routine too, the Instagram Reels download guide explains its own quirks, and the all-platforms downloader guide puts every network side by side.

FAQ

Can I download a video from a private Facebook group?

No. Private group content is only visible to members who are logged in, and the downloader doesn't log in. Ask the person who posted it for the original file.

Does it work with Facebook Reels?

Yes, public Reels work. Copy the link from the share arrow in the app or the facebook.com/reel/ address in a browser.

Why do I get a short fb.watch or /share/ link?

That's how the app shares videos. They usually work, but if one fails, open it in a browser and copy the full address it redirects to.

Can I save only the audio from a Facebook video?

Yes. The audio button saves the soundtrack, usually as M4A, which plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.

Will the download include the caption or comments?

No. You get the video file only. Copy the caption text by hand if you need it.
